Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Kanpur, is a branch of the worldwide Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math. Over the century the Ramakrishna Order has been lauded in India and abroad for its humanitarian work based on spirituality.
The Kanpur branch started modestly in the 1920s by a few inspired youth who began serving the poorest people, especially students. These pioneers, who later took up monasticism, were fired with the ideal of national regeneration through service as envisaged by Swami Vivekananda. This saga of sacrifice and social uplift, over the years, has become a legend in Kanpur.
The Ashrama service activities are:
- A Charitable Dispensary serving the poor and the ill, besides organizing Medical Camps outside Kanpur through a Mobile Medical Dispensary
- A Library catering mainly to poor school and college students
- A Higher Secondary School with 800 students
- Slum Development work where Free Coaching, Food, and Clothes are given to children and women.
- Spreading the great message of Sri Sri Thakur-Ma-Swamiji along with Value Education in Schools, Colleges, and other Institutions.
- Relief Work in times of distress and crises
All these activities centre round a small temple whose foundation stone was laid in 1936 and dedicated in 1937. Having been engaged with the pressing social uplift, cultural, and religious activities, the infrastructure was not given priority. This infrastructure needs to be modernized as that will give a big boost to the current activities and also permit us to venture in other fields of service.
The needs are:
a) The dilapidated Temple needs extensive repairs and so do the cramped Monks’ Quarters, Dispensary and Library Buildings. The details of these massive projects are:
|Sl No||Purpose||Amount (in INR.)|
|1||Renovation and Remodelling of Temple||60 Lakhs|
|2||Construction of a First Floor of the Monks’ Qrts.||70 Lakhs|
|3||Construction of New Office Block & Books Sales||80 Lakhs|
|4||Upgrading the Dispensary and its Building||30 Lakhs|
|5||Modernizing the Library and renovating it||25 Lakhs|
b) Funds are also required for administrative and other general expenses of the Ashrama such as the Pujas, Utsavs, staff salaries, and maintenance of monastic inmates.
c) Donations are invited for helping spread the message of Thakur-Maa-Swamiji along with Value Education in Schools, Colleges, and other Institutions
